Shapes Word Wall
A "Word Wall" is more than just a decoration; it’s a living tool that helps children bridge the gap between seeing a shape and naming it. Our Shapes Word Wall set is designed to be a permanent reference point that builds confidence in young mathematicians.
From the simple circle to the eight-sided octagon, this collection covers all the essential geometry vocabulary your students need.
How to Use the Shapes Word Wall for Active Learning:
1. The "I Spy" Game: Once the cards are on your wall, play a quick game of "I Spy." Say, "I spy with my little eye, a shape with six sides!" Students then have to look at the Word Wall, find the Hexagon, and point to it.
2. Writing and Spelling Station: Use these cards as a guide at your writing center. Encourage children to practice writing the name of the shape under their drawings. Having the word right there on the wall reduces the "How do you spell...?" questions and encourages independence.
3. Group Sorting Activities: (If printed as individual cards) Have children sort the shapes by their properties: "Shapes with corners" vs. "Shapes with no corners," or "Shapes with 4 sides" vs. "Shapes with more than 4 sides."
4. Daily "Shape of the Day": Pick one card from the wall each morning. Throughout the day, challenge students to find that specific shape in their environment—in the playground, in their lunchbox, or in the hallway.
Why This Set is Essential:
This collection doesn't just stop at squares and triangles. By including shapes like the Pentagon, Octagon, and Rhombus (Diamond), you are introducing children to advanced vocabulary early on, making future math lessons much easier to grasp.
Placement Tip:
For the best results, place these cards at the children's eye level. This makes the words easier to read and the shapes easier to examine closely during independent work time.
