Flashcards are flexible learning tools when children actively use them. Short games that involve choosing, grouping and explaining are more meaningful than repeating a long stack.
01
Start with a small deck
Use five or six familiar cards and add new ones gradually. Mix one less familiar card into a group the child can already name.
02
Change the response
Ask children to sort cards, find a requested card, describe one without naming it or match a card to an object in the room.
03
End with success
Finish with a quick activity the child enjoys. Store related cards together so the same vocabulary can be revisited over several days.
